A major $1.3m upgrade to public facilities at Leighton Beach was officially opened this morning by Western Australian Premier Hon. Colin Barnett MLA.

The new facilities are the result of two years of community consultation and upgrade works to deliver accessible change rooms, an upgraded kiosk café space, public art works and native landscaping.

“Leighton Beach is one of Perth’s most popular beach areas with a growing residential population, local surf and swim clubs, café visitors and a future hotel development, so an upgrade to the 50 year old facilities was necessary to complement this much-loved community recreation space,” said Fremantle Mayor Dr Brad Pettitt.

“The surfing culture is also an important part of this area’s history, and inspired the public art works and building design, which provides more universal access for all our beach visitors to enjoy.”

Other community facilities include fully-accessible toilets, family changerooms, waterwise showers and taps, LED lighting, bicycle racks, footpaths and ramp access to the beach.
